Dog & Muzzle – Basics
Does my dog need a muzzle?
Every dog should be accustomed to a muzzle. It may happen that you get into a situation with your dog where the muzzle is mandatory. A muzzle with food protection protects your dog from poison baits, or unwanted food intake. Of course, many dogs do not need a muzzle permanently. If it must be then however, the muzzle is to be trained. The muzzle must be comfortable to wear the dog.
Does a muzzle help against barking?
NO! A muzzle must be deep enough for the dog to pant. Thus, he can open his catch and bark. Barking is your dog’s way of communicating. This should be possible with a muzzle. If only for the reason that conspecifics can adjust to your dog.
Does a muzzle help against poison bait?
Muzzles with feeding protection such as the Limuzz PRO reliably protect against the ingestion of unwanted food. Whether it’s poison bait or disgusting other things.
Measurement, size & fit
What do I need to measure to order my Limuzz?
This is very simple, you always measure away from the base of the nose (i.e. at the stop). (You can find our measuring instructions here).
- Once the catch length
- Once the catch height
- Once the muzzle circumference
How do I measure a muzzle correctly?
There are measurement instructions from each manufacturer on how to measure a muzzle. We at Limuzz have studied the anatomy of the dog’s head long and hard. For our muzzle we need the exact measurements of the dog’s nose, always measured at the base of the nose (stop). No additions, no estimates, no measurements from the desired muzzle, no balls in the mouth when measuring. We know how the dog’s head is created and fit the muzzle perfectly to your dog. You can find our measuring instructions here.
How big should a muzzle be?
The most important thing about a muzzle is the fit. The better the fit, the easier and faster the dog will accept the muzzle. A muzzle should fit exactly that it can not be stripped by the dog. However, it should not hinder the dog’s behavior. The muzzle must be deep enough to allow the dog to pant. If the dog cannot pant, it cannot regulate its body temperature. Muzzles that are too small are therefore a burden for dogs.
What is the right size for a muzzle?
With Limuzz there is no fixed muzzle size. Other manufacturers think in terms of XS, S, M, L,… We fit each muzzle to your dog so that it has enough room to pant and not have the muzzle come off. With one measurement, you have finished the muzzle search.
How can you make a custom fit muzzle with only 3 measurements?
We have spent over a year studying dog head anatomy very intensively, measuring countless dog breeds using 3D scanners and obtaining opinions from veterinarians. Based on these data, we were able to develop a mathematical model that is the same across breeds for nearly all dog breeds. That is why it is possible for us to make a super accurate fitting muzzle with only 3 data.
Will my Limuzz fit my Chihuahua?
YES. Dogs who have always had trouble finding a muzzle for their little noses have a wonderful workable muzzle solution for the first time with Limuzz.
Is the Limuzz also available for flat noses?
Yes – We also offer a perfectly fitting solution for Frenchis, Pugs, etc. in our store. Again, each muzzle is made individually for your dog.

You will receive a shipping confirmation with tracking number as soon as your LiMUZZ has been handed over to the post office.

Can I exchange my Limuzz if it doesn't fit?
Limuzz is custom made for each order and also fits perfectly only the dog that has been measured. Therefore, if a Limuzz does not fit, we unfortunately cannot take it back. However, we check each order when it is received whether the measured values can be correct. If we have the feeling that the values do not fit we will contact you and adjust the values. This way we can make sure your LiMUZZ fits.
Safety & comfort
Is Limuzz comfortable for the dog?
Limuzz is not a biting basket. Our goal was never to develop a bite basket. If something like this is necessary for socially incompatible dogs, we recommend a wire bite guard so as not to put your own dog, other dogs or even people in danger in the worst case.
Our muzzle was developed from 2 basic considerations:
- As an everyday muzzle for dogs that simply must wear a muzzle on different occasions: public transportation, public buildings, cities, etc.
- As protection for the dog from unwanted eating of everything that the dog owner just wants to prevent. This is especially about poison bait, which is always put out by impossible people.
Muzzle or muzzle loop?
Muzzle is the only choice in this case. Muzzles are not muzzles and are considered cruelty to animals if worn continuously. They prevent panting and thus the adequate regulation of body temperature. Mouth loops are at most an option for short use at the vet. They are unsuitable for all other applications.
Why is the outdoor version available?
For people who like to be active with their dog, possibly do dog sports, or simply have a very active dog but want it to wear a muzzle, the outdoor version is intended. This one is a little more stable and solid.
Is my Limuzz bite resistant?
Limuzz is not a biting basket. Our goal was never to develop a bite basket. If something like this is necessary for socially incompatible dogs, we recommend a wire bite guard so as not to put your own dog, other dogs or even people in danger in the worst case.

How stable is my Limuzz?
Limuzz was developed together with the IPPE Research Institute at the University of Linz, where it was tested for all possible forces that can act on a muzzle. Your muzzle can withstand a lot and is still very flexible. BASIC variant is the most flexible solution due to its shape and is ideal as an everyday muzzle. In the PRO version (PRO = Protection), the muzzle as a whole is stronger, because the incorporated feeding protection also strengthens the structure of the muzzle.
Material & production
What are the material properties of my Limuzz?
For people who like to be active with their dog, possibly do dog sports, or simply have a very active dog but want it to wear a muzzle, the outdoor version is intended. This one is a little more stable and solid.
Why is Limuzz produced using the 3D printing process?
We chose 3D printing because it gives us complete freedom in the design and shape of the Limuzz, and we don’t have to think about one-size-fits-all and industrial production methods for new designs in the future. Limuzz is also intended to benefit dogs around the world. With 3D printing, we have the opportunity to keep the added value in the respective country and ensure short distances from our production to the customer.
Where does my LiMUZZ come from?
Your Limuzz is 100% made in Austria. We rely on Austrian quality and cooperate with regional partners. This makes processing easier for us and saves long transport routes.
Animal welfare conformity
When developing our models, we consistently follow the specifications for animal welfare-compliant muzzles. In this way, we ensure that your dog is not only safe, but also comfortable and species-appropriate when out and about.
Where does the name LiMUZZ come from?
Limuzz – pronounced “Leimas” – comes from English and is a fusion of the two English words “light” and “muzzle”. Limuzz is made of a very strong but at the same time lightweight material. That is why our muzzles are up to 2/3 lighter compared to other products on the market and therefore comfortable for the dog to wear.
Muzzle comparison: leather, biothane & metal
Leather muzzle
Leather muzzles were for a time very remains, because leather gives the feeling of a natural product. At the same time, leather is a soft material that gives the impression that the muzzle hugs the dog’s nose.
Advantages:
Natural product: However, care should be taken to ensure that the leather has been processed sustainably and that no toxic residues from the tanning process have remained in the material.
Disadvantages:
Shape: The leather muzzle baskets are often all mass produced and only produced in standard sizes. The shape often does not fit the dog’s nose.
Maintenance: If the leather muzzle is to be beautiful for a long time, then ongoing care with leather care products is necessary. If this is not done, leather often becomes hard and brittle. Leather absorbs moisture and tends to grow mold if not properly dried.
Material used: mass-produced leather muzzles are 90% imported product, where it is impossible to say what pollutants are in the leather due to tanning and dyeing. The care products are also often not free of harmful substances. But then lie directly on the dog’s nose.
Biothane muzzle
Biothane muzzles are made of plastic. The colorful ribbons are used for muzzle making.
Advantages:
Near to infinite possibilities of color combination
Disadvantages:
Weight: The bands must be connected with metal rivets. This significantly increases the weight of the muzzle. Especially for small breeds of dogs muzzle is very heavy in relation to the dog.
Care: Dirt and water can collect between the bands connected with rivets. Cleaning is not always ideal.
Biothane muzzles are often equated with leather because of their name. Based on the name, a natural product is assumed here.
Fit: With standard products that have not been adapted to the dog, often poor fit.
Confusion: The muzzles made of biothane are often equated with leather or a natural product because of the name. Based on the name, a natural product is assumed here. But the material is plastic. Even more, there are some muzzles on the market that look similar to biothane, but often use a different material. Here it can not be said with certainty that the muzzles are free of harmful substances.
Metal muzzle
Metal muzzles are available in different versions.
From the very light, extremely thin wire muzzle. This is very popular with greyhound owners.
Up to very heavy solid muzzles for dogs with real intent to damage.
Advantages:
Metal muzzles are the only muzzles that really hold up as bite guards. But they are only necessary for dogs that have a real intention to damage.
Disadvantages:
Wire muzzles: the thin wires can break relatively easily, and there is a significant risk of injury to the dog. The thin wires of the muzzle pierce the nose, or eyes of the dog.
Metal Muzzles:
Risk of injury: Metal muzzles are very massive. The muzzle alone in itself creates a risk of injury to another dog or human.
Weight: Solid metal muzzles are very heavy and put a strain on the dog when carried.
Fit: Metal muzzles have standard sizes. Often the size that the dog can not pick up is much too small and the dog can not pant. The next size is so large that the dog can take off the muzzle. This makes the safest metal muzzle useless.
Customization work: metal muzzles can be bent, cut, and somehow adjusted to the dog. Dog owners often do this themselves, or give the muzzle to a specialist for fitting. Both lead to the fact that a new product must be damaged directly after purchase and thus cannot be exchanged. The adjustment by an expert, increases the cost of the muzzle acquisition.

Limuzz is extremely light and fits very precisely. This makes it easy for the dog to accept the muzzle. Also in tests with our ownDogs we have made consistently positive experiences with the acceptance of the muzzle. The dogs quickly get used to it, and even the longer-term wearing was very well accepted by all dogs. Therefore, we assume that it is quite comfortable for the dogs. However, we did not receive any concrete answers to our question.

Limuzz is impact resistant, tensile, flexible and harmless if swallowed. It has a surface that feels like soft rubber and does not squeeze or chafe the dog. The material is waterproof and can be easily washed with cold water after use. An occasional wash in the dishwasher will not harm your Limuzz.
